On December 4, 2010, I was invited to attend the first annual Gigaton Awards – an event created by Sir Richard Branson’s non-profit organization Carbon War Room, in order to showcase business leadership, as well as inspire and challenge businesses to make a difference to climate change and global sustainability. The Gigaton Awards were hosted at the World Climate Summit, which took place during the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Cancun, Mexico.
Among 28 nominees were companies like Nike, The Coca-Cola Company, Panasonic, Siemens Wind, Vodafone Group, Anheuser-Busch, Sony Corporation, GDF Suez, 3M and Boeing, to name a few. Though on a personal note, for me it was simply an honor to meet and photograph some of the world’s most remarkable people, like Sir Richard Branson, Ted Turner, José María Figueres and other visionary entrepreneurs who are determined to make implementation of sustainable business practices profitable.
Here’s the list of the Gigaton winners in their respective industry sectors: Suzlon (Energy), Vodafone Group (Telecommunications), Reckitt Benckiser Group (Consumer Staples), Nike (Consumer Discretionary), 3M (Industrials) and GDF Suez (Utilities).
