During my recent trip to Isla Holbox, in Quintana Roo, Mexico, I was reminded just how extremely the weather and consequent mood fluctuations can tint perception of reality. From seemingly endless rain of the trip’s first half, then brilliant sunlight of the second, my time on this mysterious, hurricane-beaten island was marked by an emotional journey which showed me a full spectrum of my own feeling capabilities. Though not necessarily pleasant on the surface, underneath the emotions, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the experience of a distinct awareness of the unfeeling and unthinking core… In retrospect, looking through these images, I see a reflection of the same thing – a physical environment which looks so drastically different in rain versus sun, yet with a presence throughout of something permanently bare, empty and hauntingly beautiful.
